SPECIAL ISSUE:

The History of Media Literacy

The Journal of Media Literacy Education (www.jmle.org) welcomes submissions of scholarly articles or “Voices in the Field” essays concerning the history of media literacy. The history of media literacy is the story of people’s efforts to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to respond to changing media environments in order to participate and claim power in societies where media and technology play increasingly important roles in education, family life, social relations, public health, politics, economics, the arts and sciences, and popular culture.

At the Symposium on the Historical Roots of Media Literacy September 20, 2013 participants explored the past, present and future of the field and examined the multidisciplinary roots of the field. We discovered that media literacy history is richer and more complex than has been conceptualized in the scholarly literature. For the special issue, we seek contributions from scholars, practitioners and others with an interest in reconstructing the historical roots of this complex and dynamic discourse community, field and movement.

Deadline for submissions: January 31, 2014.
