Abstract

The article is a review of ‘Social Entrepreneurship in India: Quarter Idealism and a Pound of Pragmatism’ by Madhukar Shukla. It summarizes and offers clarification and elaboration of key concepts covered in the book. These include the definition of social entrepreneurship, the taxonomy of social entrepreneurs, what characterizes them, various forms that such organizations may take, and whether social entrepreneurs are fundamentally different from other entrepreneurs or similar in many ways.

The review points out the value of the book for those in social development, argues that the book is for India as well as of universal interest, and points out a few dimensions that could be covered in future work.

Author Bio

Meena Raghunathan is a Development Sector professional. She has worked in the Centre for Environment Education in India. She has started up and headed Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) for GMR Group. Currently she is Visiting Faculty, MYRA School of Business. Meera developed India’s first textbook on Environment for Undergraduate level (Sage). She has worked on various policy documents. She has authored Doing Good: Navigating the CSR Maze in India (Harper Collins, India), reviewed in MGDR, Vol. 7, No. 1.
