Abstract

Various techniques used to characterize transmission parameters (attenuation, cut-off wavelength, mode-field diameter and chromatic dispersion) of single-mode fibers are discussed. These measurements are the minimum set required to specify a single-mode fiber. Measurements and specification issues for which controversy still exists are also discussed.
