Abstract
In this paper the various techniques used to characterize the following important transmission parameters of single-mode fibers will be discussed. They are: Attenuation, cutoff wavelength, mode-field diameter, and chromatic dispersion. Single-mode fibers are increasingly being used in long-haul links, both on land and intercontinental submarine links, and are even being considered for subscriber networks. © 1988 IEEE.
