Abstract
A theoretical model which includes the effect of saturation and amplified spontaneous emission is presented and shown to be useful for modeling single-mode pumping at 980 nm of Er3+ -doped silica fiber ampifiers. The model is shown to be in agreement with experimental results. We show the advantages and disadvantages of using localized erbium doping.
