Optimized designs of Er3+ doped silica fiber lasers at 1.56μm pumped with 980nm diode lasers

Abstract
A simple theoretical model is presented and shown to be useful for modeling single-mode pumping at 980 nm of Er3+ -doped silica fiber lasers. We show the benefits of using large refractive index differences and small doping radii. The obtained designs presented exhibit slope efficiencies close to the theoretical limit and threshold powers around 1 mW.
