Abstract
Secretary of State Nellie M. Gorbea gave a virtual talk linking the centennial of the 19th Amendment to the recent election and current trends in voting rights. Gorbea made history when she was sworn in on Jan. 6, 2015, becoming the first Hispanic elected to statewide office in New England. Together with Elizabeth Francis, executive director of the Rhode Island Council for the Humanities, she spearheaded “Shall Not Be Denied,” a statewide initiative to celebrate the centennial of the 19th Amendment.
The event was sponsored by the Center for the Humanities, the Suffrage Centennial Committee, and the Social Science Institute for Research, Education and Policy.
