Abstract
Given an urgent need for operational policies aimed at ensuring the protection of a maximum amount of South Africa's biodiversity, proposes a procedure for identifying the optimal dispersion of protected areas in South Africa. The procedure should utilize both spatial and non-spatial data. Outlines the numerous databases which are needed to establish an effective GIS, and suggest methods of compiling data inventories, organizing databases and integrating the procedures of South African institutions. -from Authors
