Abstract

Summary form only given, as follows. It is well known that vector quantizers (VQs) can have substantial gain in performance over scalar quantizers in data compression applications. The author focuses on another aspect of the VQ problem: the encoding of the VQ's output for transmission over a noisy channel. Overall, the scope of this paper includes: (1) examples and coding arguments to show the performance advantage of VQs over noisy channels, and (2) heuristic design rules for codeword assignment of both unrestricted polar and diamond quantizers.
