University of Rhode Island Annual Reports, 1889-1978
The University of Rhode Island produced Annual Reports in the years 1889-1978. The University Libraries have digitized most, but not all, of the University's Annual Reports from 1889-1951. Background: In response to the passage of the federal Hatch Act providing federal funds to establish agricultural experiment stations in each of the states, the Rhode Island State Legislature established a state agricultural school and an agricultural experiment station in 1888. A board of Managers was appointed at that time as was a Director of the Agricultural Experiment Station. John Washburn was appointed principal of the Agricultural School in 1889 and classes began in the fall of 1890. In the spring of 1892, the agricultural school became the Rhode Island college of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts. In 1908 it was renamed The Rhode Island State College, and in 1951 the College became the University of Rhode Island. This series includes the Agricultural Experiment Station annual reports. Sometime in the late 1960s, the reports became internal documents from the various colleges and administrative departments to the University President. In 1978, the reports ceased to be consolidated as one document.
