Abstract

The marine plastic debris problem, brought to people's attention in the 1970s, has been a growing environmental challenge. It is estimated today that society produces 400 million tonnes of plastic every year. Of the plastic produced, only a small percentage of the plastic is successfully recycled and reused. It is important to better understand people's perceptions of marine plastic debris, so policy makers can better define the problem, develop effective policies, and gain policy support. This study aims to fill a gap in knowledge around Rhode Islander’s perceptions of the marine plastic debris problem.
