Abstract

This paper compares the effectiveness of viscous Navier-Stokes solvers, potential flow-based methods, and linear state-space models in estimating the dynamics of offshore wind platforms subjected to extreme wave events in head-seas and still-wind conditions. The study demonstrates that potential flow-based models, when properly augmented, provide proficient estimates of maximum displacements and mooring line tensions. However, while the linear state-space model offers significant numerical efficiency, it struggles to maintain accuracy under these large wave events.
