Abstract
Twelve sound types, spectrographically analyzed from recordings of captive and wild grey seals (Halichoerus grypus), included continuous and pulsed sounds. All continuous sounds showed sub-harmonic energy, and emphasized frequencies between 100 and 800 Hz. Click type sounds had energy to greater than 60 kHz, and were repeated at rates up to 1500/sec.
A behavioral significance is hypothesized for most sounds.
