Abstract

Historically, both within the United States and globally, women have not entered into science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) associated fields at the same rate as men. Several explanations have been set forth to understand this gender gap, most of them centering around women not being encouraged to go into STEM. In recent years, the percentage of women STEM workers has exponentially increased, but women still make up a minority of STEM workers. However, with women’s enrollment in college and graduate school increasing, and men’s enrollment dropping, STEM fields may start becoming predominantly women. Thus, the goal of this study was to examine whether any trends exist between gender and enrollment in STEM majors.
