Abstract
Approximately six million animals enter shelters each year. Of those six million animals, about two million are killed each year. Due to the lack of spaying and neutering and overcrowding, especially in the southern states of the U.S., the population of animals in high-kill shelters is alarming. Save One Soul Animal Rescue League (SOSARL) is a volunteer-driven non-profit dog rescue founded and based in Rhode Island. The mission of SOSARL is to permanently rehome homeless, neglected, abandoned, and at-risk dogs. The majority of the dogs rehomed by SOSARL are transported from overcrowded high-kill shelters in the Southern U.S. or from our local Rhode Island communities. The series of informative videos I created for SOSARL were aimed towards the organization’s volunteers, fosters, and adopters. The videos provide everyone within the organization access to information and tips regarding picking up dogs from transport, setting up for events, and caring for their foster or adopted dogs at home. Ultimately the videos help SOSARL to keep everyone collectively on the same page and given the same information. The videos bring efficiency to the organization and allow them to continue working towards their mission of rescuing as many dogs as possible.
As a non-profit organization, it is crucial for Save One Soul Animal Rescue League to raise money to continue transporting and caring for southern homeless dogs. Along with donations, fundraisers, and events, SOSARL has recently opened a pet retail store where 100% of the profits go to rescue. For the second portion of my honors project, I created and continue to build the social media platforms for this retail store, SOS reTAIL. Social media plays a large role in many businesses today and can be essential for attracting customers and promoting stores to their community. While building the pages for the pet retail store, it is important to gain knowledge of the products through research and meeting with distributors. Ultimately, the social media pages for SOS reTAIL have been successful. I am grateful my work is able to aid SOSARL and their commitment to helping homeless animals.
