Abstract

The documentary “The Shades of Black and Brown at URI” highlights the advances and oppressions of the Black and Brown community at the University of Rhode Island. The documentary sheds light on the daily life of first-generation Black and Brown students who attend a primarily white campus. I feature students who focus on the discomfort of being the only Black or Brown student in class, having to face microaggressions and where they go to find their safe space on campus. Showcasing the organizations, events, and students who make up the Black and Brown community on a campus which prides itself on diversity and inclusion is the ultimate goal of the film. This documentary highlights the resources on campus to make students of color feel included and heard. Ultimately, “the Shades of Black and Brown at URI” will bring greater attention to the understudied role and achievements of the 2,000 undergrad marginalized voices on our campus.
