Abstract
Leadership development is essential for companies because it drives a company’s effectiveness in reaching its goal and promotes growth among employees, causing them to want to stay with the company. Knowing how to develop employee leadership is complex because it is largely dependent on the individual and their role within the organization. I interviewed leadership professionals and human resource professionals who have experience in leadership development to guide my research. I broke up management into three categories and found that the different segments of management need different skills in order to be effective at their jobs. The first step to the development process is deciding who to develop, which can be done using assessments, charts, and talking with those who oversee them. After identifying the individuals, you must find where their skills gap lies, and whether it’s a hard or soft skill. After that, it’s time to make a development plan, which could include outside classes, mentors, coaches, etc. There’s no one way to go about this plan because it is largely dependent on the person. By completing leadership development, organizations create leaders who are able to move up in the company, retain talented employees, and save on new hire costs. I created a guide on how to cater development programs to executives, middle management, and lower management to help in the process. Understanding the process of leadership development is essential for all sizes and types of organizations because it creates a better organizational environment when properly executed.
