Abstract

Cigarette butts. Broken glass. Vape cartridges. Pieces of plastic. These were common finds when 16 URI student volunteers picked up 36 pounds of trash at Narragansett Town Beach. This beach cleanup and advocacy discussion that followed two weeks later were both in partnership with Save The Bay. The aim was to get URI students involved in the local community by removing litter from Narragansett Town Beach and learning about why it is important to protect our waterways.

The flier accompanying this project offers reasons for why someone should volunteer and a model for how a volunteer can one day lead a volunteer event such as a beach cleanup. There are also tips on the things that should be taken into consideration when planning a volunteer event.
