Abstract

Summary form only given. The author describes the data collection and processing implementations aboard the Conrad and Atlantis II research vessels for Sea Beam data collection, processing and display. These installations are based on VAX 11/730 systems running the VAX/VMS operating system. These are dual computer installations with 32-bit virtual-memory multiuser environments. When both computers are running, one is responsible for all real-time data collection and display, including Sea Beam depth and signal amplitude information; and all navigation sensors, including heading, Doppler speed log, LORAN C, Range-Range LORAN C, OMEGA, NASAT, and NAVSTAR GPS. The second VAX system serves as a source of spares for the real-time system, as well as a test bed for real-time development, and as a multiuser system for postprocessing and display of sea-beam, navigation, or any other data collected at sea. Developments in data processing and display include navigation error correction, adjustment and display, integrated topographic displays, and sonar amplitude processing and display.
