Abstract
The paper by Kaplan and Solomon [Marine Policy 73 (Supplement C) (2016) 119–121] examines the current and future maximum noise capacity of the global commercial shipping fleet. While we do not dispute that the number of ships and the total ton-miles of cargo carried will continue to increase, we find that the metrics computed in the paper are flawed and do not help assess the potential impact on marine life.
