Abstract
Accurate estimate of the modal frequencies and damping ratios of a structure is crucial to many practical engineering problems, including damage detection, structural health monitoring, etc. This article introduces the Prony 's method for identifying multiple modal frequencies and damping ratios from a measured response time series associated with a free vibration motion. Based on data synthesized from a sophisticated finite element model for a realistic offshore jacket-type platform, we demonstrate that the modal parameters estimated from the proposed method agree well with those computed from the finite element model directly.
