This dissertation is presented in manuscript format according to the guidelines of the graduate school of the University Rhode Island. Three chapters are presented covering the following: Chapter 1 a probing study of metal phthalocyanine dye interactions with four analytes of interest in the solution phase, Chapter 2 a study of the dye and analyte interactions and how they interact while on a PVDF thin film, Chapter 3 an exploration of the piezocatalytic effects of metal doped PVDF thin films.
