Abstract

Flow of particulate solids presents issues to a multitude of industries across the globe. The discharging of fine solids creates ratholes and bridges in the material which inhibits flow. This in turn, delays processes, damages equipment, wastes manpower and product which results in wasted time and money. There are many products which aim to rectify this problem in the agricultural and food product industry, but in the biotech industry where cleanliness and contamination is vital, solutions are difficult to come by.

This is where the team was tasked with improving current processes at Amgen of West Greenwich, Rhode Island. To meet the expectations of Amgen, a system that reduces the current amount of time taken by the employees to complete the process and produces less dust will need to be designed.

This article presents the work performed in designing, building, and testing the prototype. It includes design specifications, insight on the mechanical design and engineering analysis. The article will also discuss how the prototype was manufactured, results of the testing and conclusions regarding the performance of the build.
