Abstract
This capstone project aims to design a slow-heating test oven for insensitive munitions. The test oven is a purpose-built system to address the critical need for safe and compliant munitions testing. This project aims to provide a reliable solution for testing the thermal stability of insensitive munitions under controlled heating conditions, adhering to the stringent requirements of AOP-4382, AOP-39, and AOP-39.1 standards.
The design incorporates a modular, rectangular oven of 4.59 ft3 volume, capable of manual temperature control, achieving a maximum temperature of 300ºC with a uniform heating rate of 15ºC per hour. Throughout the semester, we developed a prototype, made to match the parameters of the project requirements. Key features include robust material selection, such as Aluminum 5052 and Ceramic Fiberglass Insulation, dual heating zones, and ventilation holes cut throughout the oven build.
Through extensive concept generation, evaluation, and analysis, the team developed an optimized design that meets critical customer requirements that include engineering specifications, balancing durability, energy efficiency, safety, and usability. The final design emphasizes ease of maintenance, adaptability for future upgrades, and compliance with evolving military standards. The team spent extensive time building and testing a prototype meant to effectively meet the requirements given for the slow heating test oven.
The Slow Heating Test Oven provides a standardized solution for testing insensitive munitions, enhances safety through compliance with stringent standards, and ensures operational efficiency through modular design and energy optimization. This report details the engineering analysis, technical specifications, and project management strategies employed to deliver a solution that meets military requirements while addressing the need for reliable and safe thermal testing.
