Abstract
The effective recovery of products and materials from the millions of small businesses distributed throughout the country, that individually are of little interest to large scale processing centers is addressed in this paper. Collectively these small businesses and enterprises represent an enormous source of materials and products for recycling. Effective processing of materials from this sector is done in small community based service enterprises. These enterprises are set up to deal with the wide variety of products and materials from smaller sources. This paper presents questions related to the design and efficient operation of community based recycling services. Data from a particular community based recycling company is presented, and models for efficient operation are developed.
