Abstract
A review of the existing crack branching criteria is made. Effect of stress intensity factor, crack velocity and remote stress acting parallel to the crack on the predictions of various criteria is investigated. A new criterion based on the strain energy method is proposed. This criterion predicts the influence of the stress field coefficients including the stress intensity factor and the remote stress acting parallel to the crack on the crack branching phenomenon. Experiments have been conducted to verify the predictions of the proposed criterion. © 1990.
