Abstract
This paper discusses various methods of reducing the surface roughness of parts produced using free-form fabrication methods. Issues surrounding in-situ surface roughness measurement in free-form production environments are discussed. Several methods for generating paths for surface roughness improvement, leading to shortest path calculations are developed. The parameters involved in the surface roughness improvement process are discussed and a procedure for optimizing these is detailed. Results obtained with this method are also illustrated and discussed.
