Abstract
The main elements of an early cost-estimating procedure for hot-forged parts are described. This procedure is a simplification of a design for forging system developed previously. Using the procedure, the main cost contributions for material, equipment, utilisation and tooling are estimated from a relatively small amount of input information, which includes attributes of the part which should be available at the early stages in product design, before detailed component design is undertaken. The estimating procedure is intended to be used, along with similar procedures for other processes, at the early stages of product design, when decisions on component configurations and processes are being made. © 1992 Springer-Verlag London Limited.
