Abstract

An experimental investigation was conducted on the machinability of aluminium oxide ceramics using the high pressure abrasive waterjet. The sintered alumina ceramics, supplied by the Coors Porcelain Company, were used as workpieces to determine the stock removal characteristics of the high strength ceramics. To quantify the material removal mode in terms of the various processing parameters, a series of piercing and cutting experiments were conducted. The workpieces containing different percentages of the pure alumina (85%, 94.5% and 99.9%) were pierced and cut. The processing parameters were measured and analyzed in terms of the water pressure, grain size, abrasive flow rate, abrasive type and traverse speed. The results were compared with other material removal processes including the waterjet processes applied to metallic materials. (A)
