Abstract
The rail-wheel tribosystem is a complex system in which output parameters in the form of wear and fatigue related problems are closely associated with and governed by the nature of the tribosystem input. This input is classified in groups that include operational, contact mechanics, material and rheological parameters. These parameters are discussed and their contribution to rail wear mechanisms is detailed. (A)
