Abstract
Significant characteristics of a heuristic optimization scheme are described in general and specifics of the method are explained in detail for the following design application: determine the number of teeth of the gears in a two-mesh gear train given the overall gear ratio. It is believed that description of this particular optimization technique, applied to a rather simple design problem, will result in greater understanding of the principles involved and will demonstrate the effectiveness of the method in reaching an optimum design.
