Abstract
The application of the Smooth Orthogonal Decomposition(SOD) based mode shape identification for the linear discrete-parameter vibration system had been presented in our previous paper. This paper aims at extending the application of this algorithm to the continuous vibration systems and addressing the issue of extracting the damping factors. We start with a brief description of the SOD and then give a mathematical foundation for its application to modal parameter identification. Proper Orthogonal Decomposition(POD) based mode shape extraction is provided and is used for comparison purpose. Numerical examples, mostly using the beam bending subjected to various boundary conditions, are provided. The procedure of estimating the damping ratios based on the SOD is introduced. We discuss the effect of noise on the performance of this method.
