Abstract

A portion of the monograph collection in an academic library can be evaluated by one subject specialist devoting a part of his/her time to the task. The vertebrate zoology collection at Clemson was evaluated, comparing the ichthyology, herpetology, ornithology and mammalogy subdisciplines in terms of past selection efforts, average copyright dates, circulation frequencies, and numbers of titles in narrow call number ranges. The scholarly levels of the monographs in the collection were also examined. Circulation frequencies are distributed in a manner resembling a Bradford-Zipf distribution. Close observation of each title in the sample provided a familiarity with the collection which was valuable in later selection efforts. © 1985 by The Haworth Press, Inc. All rights reserved.
