Abstract
The literatures of biochemistry and ecology (and related environmental biology) are compared using citation analysis. Source articles published in 1986 were obtained by random samples from the Biological Abstracts sections "Biochemistry" and "Ecology (Environmental Biology)." Citation ages, subject diversity, and publication type diversity were assessed. The biochemical literature showed somewhat lesser citation ages, but the citation age profiles are similar for the two disciplines. The ecological literature shows greater diversity in subject disciplines cited. Both disciplines cite a wide variety of publication types, but biochemists cite journal articles in higher proportion. Diversity measures are used in the analysis.
