Abstract
The bottom topography and the vertical profiles of salinity and potential temperature in the Cariaco Trence suggest a vertical diffusion-advection model for its anoxic zone. In the upper 700 m of the zone there is evidence foradvection, and disica and sulfide appear to be consevvative because their concentrations have linear regressions against potential temperature. Dissolved silica appears to be conservative in the lower 400 m of the zone as well, and thus the sediments are its only source within the Trench. The flux of silica from the sediments can be used to estimate the parameters of water movements in the anoxic zone, including the residence time of the water in the upper 700 m: 800 years. © 1972.
