Abstract
This chapter details the process and applications of amino acid (AA) analysis in animal tracking as well as addresses the assumptions and inherent limitations that must also be considered when dealing with AA isotope data. The authors provide a brief primer on amino acid biochemistry and isotope discrimination with regard to nitrogen, carbon and hydrogen metabolisms and also touch upon consumer physiology. This is followed by a close examination of several case studies involving the compound-specific isotope analysis-amino acid (CSIA-AA) methodology and how this approach can be successfully applied to radically enhance the fields of migration studies and foraging ecology.
