Abstract

Fifty-six of the more abundant estuarine epipelic diatoms are described from surface sediment samples collected from the upper basin of the Pettaquamscutt River, Rhode Island. Biraphid diatoms are the dominant primary producers on the muddy sediment under 2 to 7 m water. Three families are represented (Navicula-ceae, Nitzschiaceae, and Surirellaceae) of which the first is the most important. The genus Navicula is represented by 19 species. All forms from the Pettaquamscutt River occur elsewhere in shallow marine areas. After the water column became stratified only two taxa, Navicula ammophila Grunow and Navicula pseudocrassi-rostris Hustedt, grew well at 5—5.5 m. © 1984, Walter de Gruyter. All rights reserved.
