Abstract
In an 18-month trial program 37 sea surface temperature (SST) charts from 39 degree 30 prime to 42 degree N and 68 degree 30 prime to 73 degree W were prepared from satellite data and mailed to southern New England fishermen. User response was sought and where appropriate the charts were modified to meet user's requests. Approximately halfway through the program, a gradient analysis chart and an enlargement of a subsection of the base chart were also included in the mailings. A questionnaire distributed at the end of the program showed significant interest in the charts as an aid in determining where to find fish. The technological difficulties in producing and distributing these charts in a timely, cost-effective manner are discussed.
