Abstract

The authors describe an event based pitch detector which overcomes the classical pitch detector problems of not being sensitive to nonstationary pitch variations and not being suitable for low pitched and high pitched speakers. They apply the dyadic wavelet transform (DyWT) to detect glottal closure, which they define as an event, and estimate the pitch period by measuring the time interval between two such events. The performance of this event based pitch detector is compared with that of non-event based pitch detectors which use cepstrum and autocorrelation methods to estimate the pitch period.
