Abstract
Semiconductor lasers with an external cavity (SEC) using strong frequency-selective feedback with a diffraction grating are being investigated extensively for use with differential phase-shift keyed (DPSK) and PSK coherent fiber-optic communication systems. Extensive calculations are reported of the Lorentzian linewidth as a function of the detuning angle with the variation of various critical cavity parameters. The results will lead to better design of SEC lasers using a strong frequency-selective feedback with a diffraction grating.
