Abstract
A simple step-index with depressed-cladding single-mode fluoride fibre gives excellent dispersion flattening over a broad spectral range, 1.5-2.9 μm. The extrinsic losses due to macrobending, microbending and splicing are also minimised. This design enables the use of fluoride fibres at ~ 1.55 μm and later can be upgraded to 2.55 μm, where predicted losses are significantly less than those of silica fibres at 1.55 μm. © 1988, The Institution of Electrical Engineers.
