Christine Dolan, Education Specialist II, Education. Student veterans face unique challenges in transitioning from the rigorous regimen of a soldier to the less structured environment of a college student. Among the challenges faced by veterans are the need to overcome isolation on college campuses, and the need to overcome uncertainty about GI Bill benefits. In addition, colleges and universities should their responsibilities of providing adequate support for veterans, integrating them into the campus community, and supporting them toward success, retention, and degree completion. This workshop will discuss the experiences of student veterans in their engagement with the campus community; the commonalities of student veterans in defining academic and social success in college; and campus initiatives that can create conditions for student success.
