Abstract
This paper investigates the response of a nonlinear oscillator subject to Poisson-distributed pulse process (non-Gaussian delta-correlated process). Methods employed to obtain the response statistics include the fourth-order cumulant-neglect method and Monte-Carlo simulations. Simulation results are used for the purpose of examining the accuracy of the simple and efficient cumulant-neglect technique. Observations are made to determine the critical impulse arrival rate beyond which a non-Gaussian delta-correlated process can be replaced by its Gaussian counterpart yet still yield almost identical estimations on response statistics of various nonlinear systems.
