Abstract
This paper presents a simple strain-based model to screen for water wave-induced residual pore pressures in environmental sediment caps that can adversely affect their stability and performance. The approach is based on the threshold shear strain concept that was originally developed for assessment of seismic liquefaction potential. An equation for the cyclic shear strain induced in the bottom sediments from water waves is derived and compared to threshold cyclic shear strain values compiled from the literature. An example is presented to illustrate the practical application of the method but still requires experimental validation. © 2012 American Society of Civil Engineers.
