Abstract
A recent application of the coupled-cluster expansion to the three-dimensional electron gas is extended to the investigation of the correlation energy of the two-dimensional and quasi-two-dimensional electron gas. For the two-dimensional electron gas the correlation energy is evaluated over a range of rs from 0.5 to 16 using the ring terms of the T2-approximation. Results are also presented for the quasi-two-dimensional electron gas which imposes a finite thickness on the system and is representative of electrons in MOS inversion layers. Comparisons with the recent dielectric calculations of Jonson indicate the ring approximation to the coupled-cluster method to be more accurate in the quasi-two-dimensional case than in two dimensions. Possible methods for improving the results in the two-dimensional case are proposed. © 1978.
