Abstract
A study on non-pinched solutions of single distillation columns and multi-unit chemical processes was carried out. The approach proposed by Lucia et al. based on the shortest stripping line distance could be used to find non-pinched solutions. Solving an integer program for a finite number of stages to further reduce the stripping line distance under the conditions that the column was feasible. Example problems showing that the shortest stripping line methodology is capable of finding minimum energy requirements with non-pinched distillations were presented. This is an abstract of a paper presented at the 2007 AIChE Annual Meeting (Salt Lake City, UT 11/4-9/2007).
