Abstract
Experimental work has been performed to determine the heat transfer characteristics of coal liquefaction preheaters and reactors. Water and gaseous nitrogen have been preheated and then cooled in both packed and unpacked columns. Flow was up the columns and cocurrent. Effective thermal conductivity and wall heat transfer coefficient parameters were determined for the packed bed. A dispersion coefficient and wall heat transfer coefficient were determined for the unpacked column.
