Abstract
The development of a small closed-loop wool scouring method involving the use of Freon TF as solvent to combat pollution problems is described. A small-scale study reveals that a flow of the solvent through a bed of raw wool, in sequence with a water rinse, produces adequately clean wool. The method of removing the solvent from the material without significant losses is discussed. It is shown that the process is energy-efficient and produces low volumes of effluent. Clean wool grease is obtained and the solvent can be recycled.
