Metabolic syndrome and antipsychotic therapy: A summary of the findings

Robert L. Dufresne, University of Rhode Island

Abstract

Therapy with antipsychotic agents can lead to weight gain and elevation in serum triglyceride levels and has been associated with glucose dysregulation. Baseline screening plus monitoring of weight and blood glucose and lipid levels in patients receiving antipsychotics are essential to avoid metabolic problems while maintaining optimum therapy for mental illness.
