Abstract

The pattern of fresh groundwater outflow at the coastal margin of a phreatic aquifer can be approximated by a quasi-transient analytical model. The suggested procedure includes transformation of anisotropic porous media to an equivalent homogeneous isotropic media and calculation of the dynamic extension of the outflow zone caused by tidal fluctuations on the beach slope. It is found that fresh water outflow occurs primarily during ebb tide from midtide to low tide and extends over a distance many times that given by the static outflow calculation. An example of the application of the procedure is presented for the groundwater outflow pattern at the salt water lagoon margin of a barrier beach.
